Job Description

Nature of Work

Under general supervision and at the full-performance level, this position provides clerical and administrative support, primarily for the BCSE Attorney, in a Child Support Enforcement (CSE) setting. The role requires the exercise of discretion and independent judgment and includes assisting an attorney or Administrative Supervisor.

The work involves substantial contact with attorneys and judicial personnel to compile necessary information. This position is distinguished by the depth of administrative support required and the frequent need for interpretation of gathered information, especially when attending meetings on behalf of a supervisor.

The incumbent applies specific knowledge to complete complex, procedural, or unusual assignments. While some tasks are routine, the employee works closely with a supervisor to establish objectives, priorities, and deadlines—and may independently set goals and timelines for individual assignments.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responding to procedural or program-related inquiries or referring them appropriately.
  • Handling frequent confidential or sensitive communications with professionalism and tact.
  • Staying up to date on agency/departmental policies, and state, federal, and local laws related to Child Support Enforcement.
  • Collecting and summarizing information from books, periodicals, and other sources for attorney/supervisor review.
  • Performing basic statistical research to compile reports on division, section, or unit activities.
  • Composing correspondence related to inquiries that require substantial knowledge of child support policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Managing telephone communications: answering, screening, and placing calls.
  • Screening incoming mail, responding to routine correspondence, scheduling appointments, and arranging travel for the supervisor.
  • Gathering and providing factual information that requires reference to various sources.

Location: This position is located in Hancock County .

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Successful completion of a paralegal or legal secretarial training program.

Substitution: Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in a legal setting in the capacity of a paralegal or legal secretary

OR a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university

OR five years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience performing clerical duties encompassing a wide range of office practices which must have included typing, screening and routing telephone calls and correspondence, and composing routine correspondence.
